Resizing a Partition |
The easiest way to resize a partition using iPartition is to use the pie chart and simply drag the resize handle of the partition you wish to resize.

The pie chart will show you the maximum and minimum size of the partition.
Alternatively, you can resize a partition by changing its size in the inspector, or by editing its size in Partition Map window. Note that iPartition will not automatically rearrange other partitions if you edit the size in Partition Map window. This means that the largest partition size you will be able to enter in Detail View is the size of the partition, plus any free space after it. Conversely, changing the size in the inspector or in Partitions View may cause iPartition to rearrange other partitions on the disk to make space for the larger size.
Note that you cannot resize all types of partitions, and you will not be able to resize partitions (or perform any other operation) on the disk you booted from or on a read-only disk.
If the slider does not appear when you select a partition, it means that a partition cannot be resized.
Shrinking a partition will often require the data on the filesystem to be compacted. iDefrag Lite can do this but you will usually not need to run it because iPartition will compact volumes automatically.
The minimum size that iPartition displays is, in some cases, an estimate and it may not be possible for iPartition to shrink the partition to the minimum size. This could be because the volume is overly fragmented and iPartition is unable to compact the volume due to insufficient contiguous free space, or it could be because more data has been written to the disk since iPartition made the estimate and the time at which you commit the operation. If this occurs, iPartition will advise you what to do: you can either make the partition a little bit bigger, or you can run iDefrag Lite which will be able to fully compact your volume.
