iPartition's Recovery Feature

Version 1.2.0 comes with the ability to recover should the power fail whilst it is moving partitions (in most cases).

Moving partitions is the slowest and most risky of operations that any partitioning tool can do because it potentially affects the whole partition and there’s often not much a generic recovery tool can do to get your data back if things go wrong.

Unfortunately this feature does not yet apply to other operations although it’s worth remembering that other operations usually take a fraction of the time that a move operation will take, and if they do fail, you can often recover from them relatively easily.

What all this means is that if iPartition is taking a long time, it’s probably because it’s moving partitions and if you lose the power, accidentally remove a cable, or if there’s some other intermittent hardware problem, iPartition should be able to recover your disk.

I lost the power, what do I do now?

When you start Mac OS X, it will not detect any of the volumes on the disk. If you want your data back, it is important that you do not run any other utility on your disk since they could make irrevocable changes.

You should run iPartition again and select the disk you were working on. iPartition will inform you that there was an unfinished operation on the disk that it can recover from. All you need to do is follow the instructions and hopefully it will recover your disk.

It may not complete all the operations that you had queued, but it should take your disk to a consistent intermediate state. From there, you can return to iPartition to make more changes if required.

Do I still need to make backups?

This new feature only reduces the chance that you will lose data. We still recommend that you back-up any important data you have.

iPartition crashed whilst moving a partition, what should I do?

Contact our support team. Do not run iPartition again. Since we do not expect iPartition to crash, we would have to investigate to see what iPartition did and why it crashed.
